LP Building Solutions (LP), with a facility in Roaring River, officially observed its 50th anniversary on July 20.

The company was incorporated on July 20, 1972, and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) the following January. LP plant managers and sales associates joined Brad Southern, LP board chairman and CEO, for the ringing of the closing bell at the NYSE on July 20.

“We exist as a company to innovate, manufacture, and deliver building solutions to our customers so they can build safe, durable homes while we build lasting value for our shareholders,” said Southern. “The pioneering spirit, ingenuity, and commitment to innovation of LP employees, past and present, has made today’s celebration possible.”

The LP complex on ABTco Road in Roaring River was converted from manufacturing fiber-based siding to pre-finishing LP’s SmartSide ExpertFinish strand-based siding in 2020.

LP ExpertFinish products made at other LP locations are shipped to the operation in Roaring River to be primed, painted and in some cases cut into other value-added shapes and designs like corners and shakes.

LP employed about 100 people at the Roaring River complex in October 2020, down from about 312 people when plans to stop manufacturing fiber-based siding there were announced in November 2019.

Breeanna Straessle, LP director of corporate communications, said last week that LP is still prefinishing ExpertFinish products at the Roaring River facility and recently added 25 employees there as part of an expansion of capacity.

LP also prefinishes ExpertFinish products at facilities in Green Bay, Wisc., and St. Louis, Mo., and earlier this month broke ground for constructing a fourth facility for this purpose in Bath, N.Y., to serve the company’s northeastern market. This is LP’s 12th siding facility and 26th manufacturing site in North and South America.

LP launched LP SmartSide Trim & Siding 25 years ago after developing a technologically advanced manufacturing process that treats each strand of wood with a proprietary combination of zinc borate, resins, and waxes to help resist moisture. This gives SmartSide products the look of traditional wood with the durability of engineered wood, making it one of the fastest-growing siding brands in the nation.

Fiber-based siding production is a wet process, while the process for strand-based siding is dry.

The company opened the first oriented strand board (OSB) mill in North America, located in Hayward, Wisc., in 1979.

Another breakthrough came with development of value-added OSB products, now called the LP Structural Solutions portfolio. This line of products was popularized in 1998, when LP introduced the industry’s first commercially viable radiant barrier sheathing.

“From our early days as a commodity forest products company to our reputation today as a leading provider of specialty building solutions, LP has a long history of breaking new ground to meet the changing needs of our customers,” Southern said. “While much has changed in 50 years, we have always maintained our focus on what LP does best: innovation.”
